George Washington was chosen president of the convention. The convention was kept secret from the public. The original purpose was to fix the Articles of Confederation.
A New Government The Virginia Plan- called for a three-branch government with a bicamerial legislature in which each states membership is determined by its population.
The New Jersey Plan-alternative to the Virginia Plan, called for a unicameral legislation where each state would be equally represented.
Compromises Connecticut compromise (The Great Compromise)- congress should be composed of a senate based on equal representation, and a house based on population.
Three-fifths compromise- All free people should be counted and slaves should be counted as 3/5 of a person for representation in congress.
