Paper Two: Authoritarian States

Common mistakes focused on too many general ideas and did not have enough specific details to support them did not contain all aspects that could be discussed Simplification needed: Intro: state your answer, give a road map and move on Body paragraphs, don’t be redundant, make a statement, support it with a fact and end paragraph with an analysis contained info that did not directly help in answering the question needed more analysis and connections

#1. Account for the ineffectiveness of internal opposition to two rulers of single party states from different regions Must have some reason behind the organization of ideas Must choose two leaders from different areas Give specific info on who the opposition was and be sure it is from within that country, not outside it (do not talk about the US threat in Cuba) Explain what their impact was and why it was ineffective Explain specific policies the leaders used to maintain control NOT their rise to power Try to think of a counter argument

#2. Assess the successes and failures of the domestic policies of one of the following: Castro; Mao or Peron. Must have some reason behind the organization of ideas Must cover a wide variety of policies covering: Economic: Industry + Agriculture + Land reform Women Minorities Religion Opposition Education Youth Must include specific policies and their outcomes in order to make a well supported analysis Try to include a counter argument around what the basic argument is for what constitutes a success or failure EXAMPLE: Castro was able to throw off US corporate imperialism by nationalizing the utilities, energy, and communications companies. This could bee seen as a success…however it was a failure because he traded US economic dependency for USSR economic dependency.

#3. Evaluate the success and failures of one ruler of a single party state. Define what success or failure means to you, is it someone that benefits their people or is it someone who maintains absolute power? This opens up your paper to a possible counter argument Must cover a wide variety of policies (see question 2) Must include foreign policies as well Must have some sort reason behind the organization of your ideas

#4. Analyze the methods used and the conditions which helped in the rise to power of one single party state ruler. Must have a reason behind the organization of your ideas ONLY discuss what occurred BEFORE your leader came to power DO NOT discuss what they did once they had full control. Castro 1949-1960 Stalin 1922-1930 Hitler 1919 – 1933 Mao 1920’s – 1949 Peron 1930 – 1946 Pinochet 1970 – 1973

#5. Compare and contrast the influence in their countries of Hitler and Mao. Must have a reason behind the organization of your ideas Must be sure to COMPARE and CONTRAST Must have a minimum of SIX connections which are general (women’s rights) and then get into more specific detail Must cover a wide variety of topics: Opposition, Women, Religion, Economics, Education, , Youth, Culture… DO NOT discuss one leader, than the other, and then compare. You should be showing the connections immediately

#6. Examine the status of women in two single-party states, each chosen from a different region Be sure to chose leaders from different regions: Europe: Stalin, Hitler Asia: Mao, Pol Pot Americas: Castro, Pinochet, Peron Briefly explain status of women beforehand then explain life under the leader Give specific polices and analyze their impacts.
