Four types of houses existed side by side in both towns; atrium house; atrium –peristyle house; villas and apartments The 67 hectares of Pompeii and 22 hectares of Herculaneum were divided into rectangular blocks called insulae Houses represent 1/3 of all the buildings of Pompeii No distinct residential area existed in either towns and houses existed side by side with commercial premises.
