Define: ad hominem argument From Latin meaning “to the man” Attacking the speaker instead of talking about the real argument at hand.
Example: ad hominem argument demeaning a teacher's decision by insulting where they got their degree ex. Of course Mr. Jackson graded our papers poorly, he went to Adrian college.
Define: Allegory Fictional works in which ideas or concepts are represented through the characters.
Example: Allegory “Animal Farm”, written by George Orwell, is an allegory that uses animals on a farm to describe the overthrow of the last of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II and the Communist Revolution of Russia before WW II.
Define: Alliteration repetition of sounds in a sentence consonant sounds
Example: Alliteration Garry’s giraffe gobbled gooseberries greedily, getting good at grabbing goodies.
Explain: Allusion reference to another idea or person
Example: Allusion “Chocolate was her Achilles’ heel.” This means that her weakness was her love of chocolate. Achilles is a character in Greek mythology who was invincible. His mother dipped him in magical water when he was a baby, and she held him by the heel. The magic protected him all over, except for his heel.
