There are signs all around… Look around the room, at others, and yourself, what symbols do you see?

Symbolism Symbol: something (object, setting, event, animal, person) that stands for itself and something else Works by association Colors: white, black, blue, red Animals: Doves, snake

Is it a Symbol? Visual Reappears throughout the story Figurative language: Identified with something else with equal qualities Connected to theme

Allegories Stories where characters and places stand for virtues and vices Takes symbolism one step further Names describe what the character symbolizes The Lion King Simba= courageous warrior

Fables and Parables Two different allegories: fables and parables Fables: Animal characters act out story to teach life lesson The Tortoise and the Hare Parable: Set in ordinary world to teach a lesson about ethics The Good Samaritan
