Lesson 11.5 Extension Two-Way Tables Essential Question: How do you interpret a two-way table?

Before we start… Answer the following questions: How many people studied for the test? How many people passed the test? Make a table of the results.

What is a two-way table? Shows the observed frequencies for two categories of data collected from the same subjects

What are subjects? The people or objects being measured in a study

How do you interpret a two-way table? A two-way table shows the observed frequencies for two categories of data collected from the same subjects. You read the row and column to get your answers.

You randomly survey students at your school asking whether they are right-handed or left-handed. The results of the survey are shown in the two-way table. How many of the students surveyed are female and left-handed? Find and interpret the sum of each row and column in the table.

The results of a survey regarding individuals and the flu shot are below. How many people who got the flu shot also got the flu? How many people who didn’t get the flu also didn’t get the flu shot?

You randomly survey students at your school asking whether they are members of a social networking website. The results are shown in the two-way table. How many of the surveyed students are female and members of a social networking website? Find and interpret the sum of each row and column in the two-way table?

How do you construct a two-way table? Construct a two-way table, include row and column totals. Fill in each row and column with the data.

You randomly survey students at your school asking whether they are in favor of changing the school’s nickname. The results are: Freshmen: 140 yes, 60 no Sophomores: 80 yes, 120 no Juniors: 50 yes, 150 no Seniors: 24 yes, 176 no Construct a two way table. Then determine the percent for each class and construct a two way table of those results.

You randomly survey people leaving a movie theater and ask them to rate the movie. The results are: Male: 80 excellent, 48 good, 24 fair, 8 poor Female: 42 excellent, 77 good, 21 fair, 0 poor Construct a two way table. Then determine the percent for each gender and construct a two way table of those results.

How do you interpret a two-way table?
