Women in the 1920's

Women in the 1920's The Changing Role of Women - 1920s

Women in the 1920's The changing role of women was a result of the work they did during the war. The number of working women increased by 25 per cent. In 1920, all women were given the right to vote. 'Flappers' smoked in public, danced the new dances, and enjoyed life more.

Women in the 1920's Women's roles in society before the war was very different compared to after the war. Their help in factories and farms proved to the men in society that they were equal in ability and deserved more rights.

Women in the 1920's Before the war women had already started fighting for more rights. These women were called suffragettes, although these protests were noticed, their work and sacrifices weren't appreciated until after the first world war. Women were also expected to dress more modestly by having to wear full length skirts and only showing a small amount of skin.

Women in the 1920's However, after the war most women's attitudes changed. Like many other people in 1920's America, they wanted to celebrate and enjoy their lives now that the war was over. There was a drastic change in fashion and jobs. Instead of wearing tight and restrictive clothing they wore shorter loose fitting skirts and wore their hair in lose short styles.

Women in the 1920's Women wore clothing more convenient for activity and stopped wearing long skirts and corsets. Divorce was made easier and the number of divorces doubled - women were not content just to stay at home and put up with bad husbands. But most women were still housewives and were not as free as men.

Women in the 1920's Women found their lives changed in more than appearance, however. Society now accepted that women could be independent and make choices for themselves in education, jobs, and careers.
