(2.2) An English Settlement at Jamestown Beginning in the early 1600s, the English establish colonies along the eastern shore of North America.

1607 - English establish Jamestown Colony Groups of investors form joint-stock companies -Royal Charter must be obtained / King receives 1/5 of profit Colonists seek gold, suffer from disease and famine; “Starving Time” (1609-1610) John Smith forces colonists to farm; “He that will not work – shall not eat” & gets help from Powhatan tribe
