What is Matter? 3.5B Describe and classify samples of matter as solids, liquids, and gases and demonstrate that solids have a definite shape and that liquids and gases take the shape of their container.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Mass The amount of material or matter in an object.

The amount of space matter takes up. Volume The amount of space matter takes up.

The smallest part of matter that still has the properties of matter. Molecule The smallest part of matter that still has the properties of matter.

Classifying Matter

Solids Solids have their own shape. If you put an apple in a bowl, will it change shape? No! It has definite shape, definite mass, and definite volume.

Liquids Liquids take the shape of their container. If you put water in a cup, it takes the shape of the cup. Liquids do not have definite shape, but have definite mass and definite volume.

Gases Gases expand to take fill their container. Helium takes the shape of a balloon and air takes the shape of a room. Liquids do not have definite shape, mass or volume.
