Diversity of life forms Species

What is a species Living organisms (plant, animals, etc) that share 3 common criteria Criterion 1 : Generally, they look similar ( colour, length, mass etc.) Criterion 2 : They can reproduce together Criterion 3 : They give birth to a fertile offspring

Examples of squirrels of the same species

of Examples of squirrels of a different species

Can a zebra and a mare reproduce together? Equus burchelli Equus caballus Can a zebra and a mare reproduce together?

Can a zebra and a mare reproduce together? They can because they are closely related (same genus). However, because their parents are not of the same species, the offspring (called zorses) are sterile Zorse

Binomial nomenclature Used to designate a species. It involves two Latin words, written in italics It is international

Binomial nomenclature First word indicates the genus A genus is a group of closely related species Ex: dogs and wolves Second word qualifies the first word Example, in latin, tigris means tiger

Other examples of scientific names Binomial nomenclature is a good tool to help determine whether living organisms are part of the same species

Binomial nomenclature in plants The binomial nomenclature apply to all living organisms
