How did the French Revolution end? Notes #7

In 1795, the Reign of Terror ended and a (weak) “Directory” took control of France’s government. Maximilien Robespierre executed (July 28, 1794)

In 1799, popular general Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew this government, took control of France, and named himself “Emperor”.

The French people supported Napoleon because they hoped he would provide stability for France. Napoleonic Code (1804)

Through his military conquests, Napoleon created a huge empire for France, but he failed to conquer Britain and Russia.

Severe winters and the large size of Russia led to Napoleon’s worst defeat there. Napoleon’s invasion of Russia (June – December 1812)

Napoleon’s military failures caused him to lose power and be exiled from France in 1815 as the French Revolution came to an end. Napoleon exiled to St. Helena (December 1815) Napoleon dies (May 5, 1821) Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815)

The effects of the French Revolution included: the middle class gaining political power in France . . .

. . . and the providing of ideas for political changes occurring in Europe and in Latin America.
