Discussion Discuss at your table different social constructs at your school and environment. The roles you take on with different people. The expectations people have for you.

Social Constructs These social expectations that we face on a daily basis are not right. We need to break down these thought processes to why these have the power over us that they have and how to take that power back.

Look again We automatically assume that Alex is the boy. Let’s have an example of these social “norms” shall we... Look at this image. Look again We automatically assume that Alex is the boy.

We can change how we think “The first thought that goes through your mind is what you have been conditioned to think; what you think next defines who you are.” -Tumblr We can change how we think It all starts with you. Think again, don’t just take what you know.

How does STRIKE relate to this?

Strength It takes strength to be able to slowly change the way you think about things, and it will take a lot of work. Tolerance You have to be tolerant towards others, they are trying their best too. Responsibility It’s your responsibility to change how you think. Integrity No one else can know what you think, therefore you must have integrity and change. Knowledge You must know that it takes time, and that it will be hard, without that knowledge you will get nowhere. Empathy To change how you think, you have to be empathetic, the whole point is to change how you judge others, if you don’t have empathy it’s a waste.

“Sometimes I feel like a fish out of water “Sometimes I feel like a fish out of water. Other times a blue fish part of a beautiful aquarium… I am still swimming and smiling the only way I know how…”

Consider the following: *The nature of diversity in your pond… *How well people fit in the environment… *Identify dangerous areas, support places, obstacles, and opportunities… *Depict toxic or marginalizing practices, policies, or persons… Color your fish Using the metaphor, a pond, draw yourself in the environment of your school.
