Take the Stairs How to motivate people to take the stairs… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx_8gxh76iM Was their decision to use the stairs borne out of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation? Was your decision to come to class this morning borne out of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation? Is there anything you do on a regular basis that is not done for extrinsically-motivated reasons?

ACTIVITY SCENARIO Saleena used to shoplift when she was younger because her family was poor and needed clothing and food. Now Saleena has enough money but she finds herself shoplifting on occasion. She enjoys the craftiness it takes to steal without being caught—the feeling that she can outsmart the store owners. She also gets to wear nice clothing in return for her efforts.

SCENARIO QUESTIONS 1. What were the extrinsic motivators presented in this scenario? 2. What were the intrinsic motivators presented in this scenario? 3. Does this scenario reflect mostly extrinsic or intrinsic motivation?

MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Qualities of Self-Actualized People An accurate perception of reality. They perceive the world as it is, not as they would like it to be. They are willing to accept uncertainty and ambiguity when necessary. Independence, creativity and spontaneity. They follow their own impulses. Acceptance of themselves and others. They treat people with unconditional positive regard. Have a problem-centered outlook, rather than a self-centered outlook. They think about how best to solve a problem, not how to make themselves look good. They enjoy life. They are open to positive experiences, including ‘peak experiences’. They have a good sense of humour.

DO YOU AGREE WITH MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT IT? WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF IT? OUTLINE THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HIS THEORY.

Videos Human pyramid Application to Ratatouille Group work: -Select a film, show or real life scenario and apply Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to the scenario -You will perform the scenario in the form of a skit for the class.
