Election of 1860

8-4.3 Analyze key issues that led to South Carolina’s secession from the Union, including the nullification controversy and John C. Calhoun, the extension of slavery and the compromises over westward expansion, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott decision, and the election of 1860.

He was not an abolitionist! Event Election of 1860 Issue Abraham Lincoln ran as the Republican candidate on a platform of “free soil” Free Soil – idea that slavery should not be allowed to the new territories Lincoln did not support an end to slavery at this time - ONLY the end of the expansion of slavery He was not an abolitionist!

Result & Significance: Lincoln did not win a majority of the popular votes - but he got more votes than any other candidate. Lincoln won with Electoral votes From the North. Southern & Border states Split their votes Among several Candidates.

Lincoln received no votes from the South where he was not even allowed on the ballots in ten states. • He won the election 180-123 in the electoral college.

The worst fears of the South had come true – a president who openly opposed the expansion of slavery had been elected.
