What is VET? Vocational Education and Training has been part of the school curriculum for the past 18 years and we are part of the Registered Training Organisation, Public School NSW Tamworth RTO 90162. This means the training students receive must meet national industry standards. VET courses involve: Competency Based Assessment Working in the industry (Work Placement) Meeting HSC requirements Nationally recognised training qualifications …so what does this mean?

VET Course = Dual Accreditation Cert I, II, III + HSC Australian Qualifications Framework AQF = Certificate I, II or III + HSC VET subjects are Category B subjects. NESA issues either a Statement of Attainment or a Certificate listing all Units of Competency achieved. This is in addition to the HSC qualification. This is known as Dual Accreditation. Students may include sitting the optional HSC exam for ATAR purposes. One Category B can be used towards an ATAR.

What is competency? Demonstrating ‘competency’ means a student can perform a task or show an understanding of that task to the level required by industry standards. When the student successfully demonstrates their competence against a particular standard they will be judged as ‘competent’. There is no pass or fail. You are either ‘competent’ or ‘working towards competency’.

What about Work Placement? Work placement is COMPULOSRY for ALL VET courses. This is a NESA (National Education Standards Authority) mandatory requirement. VET students must undertake 35 hours of work placement for every 120 hours of their VET course: - 35 hours Preliminary - 35 hours HSC If you do not complete the work placement requirements you will not have the course recognised by NESA and the course will not be counted towards your HSC.

Quality Training VET teachers have undergone additional training to ensure they meet industry standards and are trained to assess students in the workplace. School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (SBAT’s) Students have the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship in conjunction with their VET course. A school-based apprentice or trainee will: Complete a Certificate II or III qualification by the end of their HSC year Complete a minimum of 100 -180 days paid work over two years Attend training each week with school, TAFE or another training provider
