What Happened? Economic and Political conditions in Europe after World War I led to fascism and World War II Fascism: power is given to a dictator and individual freedoms are denied. Spread of communism threatened peace in Europe and Asia

World War One caused… Political instability Economic devastation Great Depression High war debt by Germany High inflation rates Unemployment

Allies Great Britain France (Winston Churchill) Russia (Joseph Stalin)

Conquering the World Axis Powers conquered smaller nations. Allied powers warn to not invade Poland. Germany invades Poland. Germany conquered most of Europe with the exception of Great Britain and Russia.

What is the US doing? Remained neutral during the beginning of the war. 1941: Congress passes the Lend-Lease Act which allowed President Roosevelt to lend weapons, supplies, and equipment to any country whose defense was critical to US security. US hoped to help the Allies win the war without sending in troops Program gave over $50 billion in supplies

What is the US doing? 1941: US establishes bases on Greenland and Iceland to protect ships from German submarine attacks Japan starts invading near by nations and starts looking at land in the US Ration books are given to us families that can’t afford food

ATTACKS Italy attacked North Africa Japan attacked the Pacific area of the USA (Honolulu, Hawaii)

The United States declares war the next day. DECEMBER 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor receives a surprise attack conducted by the Japanese. Over 2,400 U.S. servicemen lost their lives The United States declares war the next day.

Holocaust 6 million Jews are murdered by Germany Directed by Adolf Hitler because of Anti-Semitism Jews were sent to extermination camps – bodies were burned in huge ovens and killed with posioned gas

Georgia and the Holocaust Governor Joe Frank Harris established the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. Goal is to teach about the Holocaust and the danger prejudice can cause Spread awareness by coming to schools, making educational materials, setting up at museums.

June 6, 1944 AKA D-Day Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France & by early1945 troops had pushed the German army out of France!

V-E Day May 8, 1945 Day celebrated for the ending of World War II Germany surrenders

Germany would be divided into four zones The Yalta Conference Germany would be divided into four zones Britain, Russia, France & U.S. would each occupy & govern a zone B

Japan refused to surrender… August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Japan still refused to surrender. August 9, 1945: A second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki

V-J Day August 14, 1945 Day celebrated for Japan surrendering and leaving the war
