What are the main beliefs of Hinduism and Buddhism? Notes #4

Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, founded in the Indian subcontinent.

Hindus believe salvation is achieved by unifying with the a spirit called Brahman, which occurs when they give up selfish desires.

Hindus believe a person’s soul must be reborn (reincarnated) into another body over many lifetimes.

A soul gets closer to Brahman by being reborn into a higher social group (caste) that is part of the caste system. ------------- -------------- --------- ---

Living a good life and having good karma can help a soul move up the caste system when it is reborn.

Buddhism is a Hindu-like religion, founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) in India.

Buddhists believe that salvation (nirvana) can be earned through reincarnation and by learning to give up selfish desires. THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS: Life is full of pain and suffering. Human desire causes this suffering. By putting an end to desire, humans can end suffering. Humans can end desire by following the Eightfold Path.

Buddhists believe that people can learn to give up selfish desires by following the Eightfold Path.
