Energy from Food Objective 21/11/2018 Energy from Food Objective To compare foods in terms of energy content using a simple experimental technique.

Starter List all of the food you have eaten in the past 24 hours. Decide whether the food is ‘good food’ or ‘bad food’ and explain what you mean by these terms. What is the difference? Hopefully they should come up with the idea that ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are not adequate descriptions for food.

Energy from Food Which food has the most energy? Chips Coke Cheese Values are per serving. Pupils should consider the per serving and per 100g. Cheese

Energy from Food Use the instructions on your worksheet to complete the practical. How are you going to make it a fair test? Record the initial and final temperature of the water each time. Calculate the change in temperature. Suggest which crisp released the most energy. Extension: Look at the energy information on the packets. Does this fit in with your results? Further Extension: Pupils could complete calculation for the amount of energy.

Plenary State the unit of energy. How many Joules are in 1kJ? Suggest one improvement for the experiment you completed today. Joule 1000 Students evaluate the experiment noting the wide range of problems and suggesting improvements (e.g. burning food going out and having to be relit or energy loss to the environment).
