Introductions of Presenters We’ll Start with Our Why Presenters introduce themselves Provide a brief discussion as to why we submitted this proposal. Reason of why we are where we are. Acknowledge that parenting/caregiving looks and feels different for everyone. Acknowledging that caring for family members other than children can also be part of this conversation as those individuals face similar challenges. Acknowledge that what we discuss today may be personal. If individuals don’t want to discuss their challenges out loud, encourage participants to journal their responses for further reflection. 2

Why did you join us today? Participant Introductions Why did you join us today? What questions do you have that you’d like to discuss while you’re here? Laura Turn to your neighbor for intros? Not sure we have enough time to do them all.

As a result of attending this discussion participants will be able to: Learning Outcomes As a result of attending this discussion participants will be able to: Discuss the successes and challenges of career advancement while balancing a family; Obtain tips and ideas for making career decisions while balancing a family; Learn how to successfully advocate for yourself and your family. Nicole Acknowledge that people can define their own family

Conceptual Framework Notion of work/life balance often researched (Edwards & Rothbard, 2000; Friedman & Greenhaus, 2000; Jones, Burke, & Westman, 2006; Parasuraman & Greenhaus, 2002, etc…) Challenges associated with advancement are inherent in this discussion, but not absolute. Role conflict was central focus of 2013 study, which is different than many previous studies. Nicole Role Conflict: a situation in which a person is expected to “play” to incompatible roles. Think about the number of roles you hold. Acknowledgement that single caregivers experience more role conflict than others, which can create more challenges in the workplace related to advancement. Role overload: those who have more than 5 roles tend to have experienced guilt, stress, dissatisfaction Work/family conflict: roles compete for time; pressure in one role causes preoccupations in another; time--there just isn’t enough Behavior-based conflicts tend to impact women more than men; leadership traits often defined as masculine rather than feminine. Implicit expectations on various roles (for example: mother/father, supervisor) Lamar to talk about his experiences re: expectations of him as a man/father How are our experiences different (or the same) based on our role? Nicole: It’s not all bad though! Research shows women benefit by holding multiple roles through financial security, larger social/support networks, increase self-esteem/confidence. Men….better health! (1981, 2006 studies).

Conceptual Framework, continued Feminist poststructuralism: valuable way to study normal, everyday practice Uses language, subjectivity, and power relations to understand and identify strategies for change Nicole Feminist poststructuralists do not view power as oppressive; rather power is exercised rather than possessed. Therefore, we need to recognize the power we have within our many roles to create opportunities for ourselves and others. The current reality in higher education and student affairs is that power dictates the complex social realities that create and support gendered institutional practices related to advancement and promotion. 6

Major considerations Institutional fit/values Support systems (family, friends, geography, cultural dynamics) Supervisor support Personal values Dual career considerations Laura What considerations are important to you or missing from this list? 7

Guided Facilitation Questions What are the successes and challenges of career advancement as a parent or primary caregiver? What considerations can or should one make regarding career decisions while balancing family responsibilities? How can professionals successfully advocate for themselves and their families? Lamar Divide participants into three groups to answer a question and report out.

Reflection Questions What are the greatest challenges I face currently around balancing my work/life needs related to caregiving? What are my needs in the workplace to manage successfully career responsibilities and caregiver responsibilities? What are my needs at home? Who at my institution will help me meet these needs and overcome challenges I face? Lamar 9

What are your next steps What are your next steps? Take some time to journal what your next steps may be in planning for various advancement opportunities given your responses to the questions and conversations today. Looking at the list of challenges and needs generated from the questions posed on the previous slide, how would advancement change, complicate, or eliminate the items? Lamar 10

Thank you for joining us today! Please remember to complete your online evaluation following the conference. See you in Los Angeles in 2019!
