Chemical vs. Physical Reactions 7th Grade Science

What are some ways that you can change a piece of paper What are some ways that you can change a piece of paper? Write down one way on a sheet of paper

Share your idea with your table Share your idea with your table. Is that a chemical or physical change to the paper? Why or why not?

Explore Listen for the teacher’s instructions. As you rotate through the stations write down: Is this a chemical or physical change? How do you know?

Indicators of Chemical Change: Change in temperature Change in color Noticeable odor (during the reaction) Formation of a precipitate Formation of bubbles

Talk with your group about your original ideas about the five reactions? Were you correct? Were you not correct? Why?

Molding clay Making slime Here are some things that you originally wrote down as chemical or physical changes. Choose five of them. Molding clay Making slime Something rusting Mixing baking soda and vinegar Cake batter turning into a cake Melting ice Kicking a soccer ball Bleaching a shirt Spinning a fidget spinner Copper corroding Are they chemical or physical changes? Were you correct? How do you know whether they are chemical or physical changes (use the indicators)?

Create a visual representation of your indicator You must: Include at least three different colors Be between three and six inches tall Be neatly done and easy to distinguish Fully represent the indicator Use all of your group members
