Characteristics of Innovations Complexity Compatibility Trailability 3 2 4 Observability Relative Advantage 1 5 Relative advantage: How the innovation is perceived as better than the idea it supersedes. Compatibility: How the innovation is perceived as being consistent with the existing values, past experiences, and needs. Complexity: How an innovation is perceived as difficult to understand and use. Trialability: How an innovation may be experimented with on a limited basis. Observability: How the results of an innovation are visible to others

COMMUNICATION Scientific research? Transfer of Idea's Similar beliefs, education, status, or interests Transfer of Idea's Similar on other variables but different in regards to the innovation Diffusion of Idea‘s Scientific research? Most individuals do not accept an innovation based on scientific research, they depend on information from those who have previously used it. Communication involving face-to-face exchange is an effective method for persuading an individual to accept a new idea.

Time: Innovativeness Timeline which an individual adopts new ideas compared to other members of a system. Five classifications of members within a social system

Time: Members of a social system Adopts innovation when little risk of failure Early Majority Adopts innovation when benefits are apparent Early Adopters Adopt innovation to conform to the norm Late Majority Eagar to try the latest, greatest innovations Innovators Skeptical the innovation will be successful Laggards Haters! Not one of Roger’s adaptor types but this group can disrupt innovation and refuse to conform.

Five steps in the innovation-decision process Persuasion Implement Decision Knowledge Confirm Knowledge: individual learns of the innovation's existence and gains some understanding of how it functions. Persuasion: individual forms a favorable or unfavorable attitude toward the innovation. Decision: individual engages in activities that lead to a choice to adopt or reject the innovation. Implementation: individual puts an innovation into use. Re-invention is especially likely to occur at the implementation stage. Confirmation: individual seeks reinforcement of an innovation-decision that has already been made.
