Presentation transcript:

Forensic Science Unit One Mrs. Pearson’s First Semester Forensic Science *For those watching by recording, watch for questions on the slides throughout the presentation. Email me the answers to the questions within two days of the lesson being presented in order to receive credit for watching the recording.

Who wants to be a Millionaire Scientist? Science is all about thinking and questioning and reasoning out answers. I will be asking you LOTS of questions and will be making you think about what we are learning. Scientists and especially CSI’s don’t work alone (otherwise we’d have some real life “mad” scientists) so I don’t expect you to work alone either. We will start at the top of our participant’s box and take turns with questions BUT, if you are struggling with the answer or just want to be sure you are on the right track, ask the “audience” and they are able to chat you some help.

Four Important Points **Those watching by recording, include in your email the four points listed on the following slides.

#1. PLAGIARISM YOU MAY NOT… What should you do? What happens if…? Copy anything word for word Textbook Websites Someone else’s work Rearrange words in a sentence Remove a few words Change a few words What should you do? What happens if…?

#2. SAVING FILES ALL files you turn in to me must be saved like this: Lastname Firstname Coursename Assignment.doc You CAN use doc, docx, or rtf formats So, if I were turning in an assignment for unit one, I would save the file like this: Pearson Ann Forensic Sci Unit One Text.doc What if…

#3. BRING YOUR MIC TO CLASS You are required to use your microphone to answer questions in Forensic Science. If you have lost your mic or it is not working properly, you MUST contact tech support (866-800-0027) and request a new one. AND you need to send me the trouble ticket number so I can verify that you are awaiting a replacement. What if…

#4. Discussion Boards Worth 1/3 of your grade We will NOT be using the questions the course vendor put into the course Look for my post titled “READ THIS FIRST” and follow the directions I left for you there. Posting done after the due date will only be eligible for 60%

How can you ACE the discussions? The discussions are worth 5 points… you need to earn at least 3 to pass each discussion. You are welcome and encouraged to revise and/or edit your posts as much as you like before the due date so, if you post early, I will have time to give you feedback to help you repost and make any necessary changes.  You will receive the full 5 points for the discussion if…

Introduction to Forensics

Today’s Plan We are on standby with the VCL so we need to hit the ground running to be sure you have the skills you need should the situation arise where you need to solve a crime. Practice observation skills Identify differences between TV portrayals of crime scene investigators and reality Distinguish between the responsibilities of a criminalist, a medical examiner and the police Understand how the scientific method helps to guide crime scene investigations

Using your powers of observation, find the stapler, the scissors, the flashlight, and The violin. Once you have found them all, private message me where you found them.

Reality vs. TV On TV… In reality… **Those watching by recording, include in your email two differences between CSI you see on TV and what really takes place.

Reality vs. TV On TV… In reality… Are the first to arrive on the crime scene Question suspects Determine the motive Get lab results in one day Crime scene investigator is in charge In reality… May not get to crime scene for a long time Never talk to suspects Must be unbiased May take days or weeks to get results Police force is in charge **Those watching by recording, include in your email two differences between CSI you see on TV and what really takes place.

What is Forensic Science? Investigating what happened at a crime scene The Criminalist conducts test on evidence to determine WHO committed the crime The Medical Examiner conducts autopsies to determine HOW the person died The Police put it all together to figure out the suspect and the motive Forensic Scientists cannot be trained in everything – What must they be trained in? Need to be trained giving a testimony **Those watching by recording, include in your email what one thing a CSI must be trained to be able to do.

The Scientific Method In what ways do CSI use the scientific method?

The Scientific Method Observation Hypothesis Testing/Experiments Record facts about the crime scene Hypothesis A possible answer to who the suspect may be Testing/Experiments Perform various experiments to determine accuracy of the hypothesis May revise hypothesis based on test results Evaluate Data Conclusion based on evidence

Unit One Lab and Assignments Lab time constraints Details, details, details! Resubmit **Those watching by recording, include in your email how much detail Mrs. P wants to see in your written work.

That’s a Wrap! What is one difference between TV CSI’s and reality?
