Navigating the New Psychology Catalog Dr. Rebecca Cameron, Psychology Department Chair Cheryl Lugo, Student Services Professional II

Agenda Catalog-why and how does it change? Catalog Rights Psychology Catalog 2012-2018 Psychology Catalog Fall 2018 How does this affect me? PSYC 101/PSYC 9 GE

Why change the catalog at all? Recession-induced changes to curriculum Continual evaluation and updating to stay current with field Changes in Community College curriculum, including ADT Impaction, faculty composition, and optimizing our resources Chancellor’s Office Executive Orders

How does the catalog change? Self-study, program review, assessment Faculty-driven (faculty governance and expertise) Department committee Department faculty College committee University committee Senate, etc. Catalog implementation

Catalog Rights “’Catalog rights’ is a term used to define the specific set of requirements…as established in the catalog for a specific year, which the student must satisfy to qualify for a degree, certificate, etc.” “Students may choose to qualify for graduation under the requirements in effect either (1) at the time they began attending any California community college or CSU campus, or (2) at the time they entered the CSU campus from which they will graduate, or (3) at the time they graduate from the CSU. In order to maintain their ‘rights,’ students must remain in continuous attendance.” Reference: http://www.csus.edu/umanual/acad%20affairs/umg05200.htm

Psychology Catalog FA 12 – SP 18 The requirements for the FA 12 – SP 18 catalogs were the following: Total 7 units of lower division: PSYC 2, PSYC 8, and PSYC 4 PSYC 100 and PSYC 101 One upper division methods One biological processes Two cognitive and learning processes One developmental processes Two individual and social processes One human diversity One capstone Total of 6 units of upper division Psychology electives Total units: 46 – 50 39-43 upper division units required Reference: http://catalog.csus.edu/archives/2017-2018/colleges/social-sciences-interdisciplinary-studies/psychology/#undergraduatetext

Psychology Catalog Fall 2018 The requirements for the Fall 2018 catalog will be the following: Total 13 units of lower division: CHDV 30, PSYC 2, PSYC 4, PSYC 8, and PSYC 9 PSYC 100 and PSYC 121 One upper division methods One biological processes Four courses from the Cognitive/Learning and Individual/Social processes categories with at least one course from each category One human diversity One capstone Total of 3 units of upper division Psychology course electives Total units: 46 – 50 (33 – 37 upper division units required) Reference: http://catalog.csus.edu/colleges/social-sciences-interdisciplinary-studies/psychology/ba-in-psychology/

How does this affect me? Current Psychology Majors will remain in their current catalog year and will not be automatically switched to the Fall 2018 catalog. Students that choose to be in the new catalog as well as incoming students will now be required to take: CHDV 30 – Human Development PSYC 9 – Introductory Statistics instead of PSYC 101 – Statistics for Psychology PSYC 121 – Methods and Statistics in Psychological Research Students that want to remain in their current catalog can take new classes towards the 6 units of upper division electives in the major: PSYC 129 – Behavioral Research Methods PSYC 183 – Teaching of Psychology

PSYC 101/9 FAQs The former upper division PSYC 101 – Statistics for Psychology is now a lower division course, PSYC 9 – Introductory Statistics for Psychology If you need to take or repeat PSYC 101, you will be able to use PSYC 9 instead (we are working with the registrar on logistics)

PSYC 101/9 FAQs Current students that still need to take PSYC 101 can do one of the following to fulfill it: Determine if you already took a community college course that we will substitute (we will facilitate this) Take PSYC 9 at Sac State Transfer it from a community college (discuss options first) Submit a Course Substitution Form Must have been passed with a C- or above Colleges that have a equivalent course are: American River College – PSYC 330, De Anza Community College – PSYC 15/SOC 15, Foothill College – PSYC 7/SOC 7

Pre-requisites have changed … …for many courses. We will work with the registrar and the department office to problem-solve this issue. Stay tuned and more information will be available before registration begins. We will need to partner with students to overcome any logistical challenges.

Upper Division GE Requirements FA 18 Beginning FA 18, students with new GE catalog rights will be required to complete their 9 units of upper division GE in Areas B – D For now, PSYC 134 and PSYC 151 will remain as GE Area E We anticipate that PSYC 135 and PSYC 137 will be changed to GE Area D beginning next Spring. Current students that still need to take upper division GE courses to fulfill your current catalog GE requirements can still take any of the four classes listed above.
