Figure 1 Hedgehog signaling, carcinogenesis, and potential therapeutic targets Upregulation of Hh ligands may be mediated by epigenetic events. Mutations in PTCH and SHOH result in activation of hedgehog signaling and are causative in basal cell carcinoma and medulloblastoma. Gli proteins are thought to mediate activation of Hh transcriptional targets potentially important in tumorigenesis, progression, and metastasis.
