Tuition fees in Canada By: Karina Budhwani

What is the issue? And why is this a big problem? The cost of going to university or collage in Canada is getting much, much higher and tuitions are at an all time high. This is a huge problem because it affects the estimated 10.2 million children and young people in Canada, who will want to gain academic degrees, diplomas or have qualifications for future job opportunities. Graph showing the percentage of people 15 to 64 (in green) from 1971.

Cost of Tuition in Canada: This bar graph shows how much money it costs for 1 year of tuition each province in Canada. On average it costs $6186 per year to study at a university in Canada. And remember this amount doesn’t include the costs of food, textbooks, electronics, and transportation.

Tuition Fees Over Time According to global news, “on average, undergraduates pay 40% more in tuition than they did 10 years ago.” With the exception of Newfoundland and Labrador where the only university maintains a tuition freeze.

Chart showing rise of cost over 10 years

possible solutions: 1. Lowering tuition fees or making it much more adorable: Lowering tuition fees would improve the lives of thousands of individuals. It would decrease the amount of student loans and debt, and give the lower class a much better chance of attending university/collage. Also higher education is becoming a standard requirement for many jobs. 2. Creating more scholarship programs: creating more scholarship programs would increase the amount of people applying and entering collage or university. 3. Learn more about bursaries , grants and tuition waivers: going to any local university or just simply searching for these online can help with fees and lowering costs. 4. Being much more cost effective and teaching students and parents to start saving up VERY early on: one of the big reasons why people cannot go to a post secondary school is because they don’t have enough money saved up. A factor of this plays in how parents don’t know that they have to start saving up as soon as possible in order to ensure that their child can attend university or collage.

How to achieve these solutions Talking to universities and different companies to start getting them thinking about scholarship programs and or seeing where they can shift costs. Going to a local collage and or having a representative talk to parents early on about how to save up or when to start saving up. And to learn more about grants and tuition waivers. Sign petitions on lowering tuition fee rates. How to achieve these solutions
