HPS EC Report John Jaros HPS Collaboration Meeting at JLAB November 18, 2016

HPS Executive Committee Members: Nathan Baltzell, Raphael Dupre, Matt Graham, Tim Nelson, Maurik Holtrop, John Jaros, Stepan Stepanyan Website on confluence with Meeting Summaries https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/hpsg/HPS+Executive+Committee Recent Business * Author lists for 2015 and 2016 running * Discussion of HPS priorities * Adjusting thesis assignments * Run time request * Status Update for JLAB Management * HPS Leadership Needs * Staffing HPS for the 2018 Run

Author Lists for 2015 and 2016 2015 list has been augmented 2016 list has been added Both are viewable on confluence: https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/hpsg/HPS+Collaboration+Membership+List+for+2014-2015+Engineering+Run https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/hpsg/HPS+Collaboration+Membership+for+2016+Physics+Run These will be relevant for upcoming publications. Please have a look. Let me know if you think changes are in order.

HPS Priorities According to EC Present and publish 2015 physics results How to help make this happen? * Encourage regular updates at the Wednesday meeting * Stimulate generation of Analysis Notes * Develop a library of approved analysis plots analysis group suggests PPC approves Process the 2016 data Improve the HPS simulation Implement the HPS Upgrade

Readjusting Thesis Assignments Landscape has changed and realities have replaced plans. Need to adjust accordingly. * Omar analyzed unblinded 10% of 0.5mm 2015 bump hunt * Sho analyzed unblinded 10% 0.5 mm 2015 vertex search Questions: * Who will analyze 100% of 1.5 mm 2015 bump hunt? * Will recoils enhance the bump hunt reach? * Are there other techniques to enhance analysis reach? * FEEs, Mollers, and Tridents have proved critical. Separate theses? Students and advisors have been asked to update plans

Run Time Request EC discussed responses to JLAB’s call for Run Time Request CY2018 Decided on the following in July, 2016: * 25 PAC days at 2.2 GeV (4 days for beam setup, commissioning, and diagnostics) * 32 PAC days at 4.4 GEV (4 days ditto) This will have to be reconsidered when we better understand our demonstrated bump and vertex reach. HPS needs to develop a longer term view as well. What do we want to do in 2019, in 2020? Probably isn’t hard: 4.4 GeV and 6.6 GeV. What about 1 GeV? < 1 GeV? If someone wants to use HPS to go after True Muonium, we need a proposal!

Status of Update for Management JLAB management is justifiably curious about when we’ll publish our first results and has informally asked for more information. We have drafted a Status Update report as an interim explanation of where we are and why, but have held off delivering it until we have resolved key assumptions it makes and outstanding analysis questions. Still in a holding pattern, perhaps to be resolved with results at this meeting.

HPS Leadership Needs EC discussed how additional leadership could help run a tighter ship. HPS floats, but could sit higher in the water. Three suggestions came forward * Tracking Czar—to oversee, coordinate, and help with tracking improvements, tracking performance studies, and alignment. * MC Czar—to oversee, coordinate, and help improve the accuracy of the detector simulation, better match the MC to the data, validate physics generators, and mix in real beam backgrounds. * Analysis Group coordinator—to organize all the input to the analyses and make them more readily accessible. Spokespeople have requested volunteers for the Tracking and MC Czar positions. Please volunteer—it’s not too late. Nathan has created a Trident Summit Followup Summary, which provides the requested organization for analysis studies. https://confluence.slac.stanford.edu/display/hpsg/Trident+Summit+Followup+Summary

Staffing HPS for 2018 Students are graduating, post docs are moving on, and the expertise needed to run and maintain HPS is evaporating. We’ll need to be at full strength for the 2018 Summer Run. EC reviewed needs of each of the major subsystems for the 2018 run. * Ecal will need 2 new students * SVT has 1 student and is getting 1 post-doc. UCSC may supply an additional student, so probably OK. * Trigger will need a new student. * Data Processing will likely need a new student or post doc * MC generation and recon will need a new student It’s hard to tie new students to HPS, especially European students, until the run time schedule is firm. Once it is clear that 2018 summer running will occur, HPS Collaborators are urged to recruit new students. Are there other posts that HPS must fill?

Future EC Business Push HPS Physics Publications and Presentations for 2015 and 2016 results. Review and Approve the HPS Upgrade Finalize the HPS Run Plan for 2018-2020 Push staffing for 2018 run Plan new HPS Theses with new Graduate Students
