Mr. Rogers Who is he? What did he do? How/What did he teach? Why is what he taught important? What are the tools he left with us?
Mr. Rogers Born 1928 Passed 2003 Educated at Dartmouth Protestant Minister Accomplished Musician Developed children’s tv show Series ran 1966-2001
Rogers Mr Rogers was a household name for many families in the US. He covered topics that many children’s shows did not discuss. He felt it is important to have hard discussions with children, but it can be done in such a way to alleviate fear yet aid in societal and emotional growth. While he wasn’t walking the streets in protest against the cruelties of society and the world, he made strong statements on his show through kindness. Mr. Rogers was an advocate for integration, inclusion of people who have disabilities, pushed for equality, and worked to build a show that would teach children how to be better adults. He addressed current events but subtly for children and gave parents a way to talk to their kids quelling their anxiety and fear Kennedy assassination video

Rogers The introduction of officer clemmons was Mr. Rogers way of working to bring about a message of integration. While he was not walking the streets during the Civil Rights movement, he used his platform to educate children on tolerance, compassion, and the need to accept people as they are. He also worked to be a voice for people with disabilities. Disability video

Rogers When funding for PBS was threatened, he fought to keep funding so children’s television would not suffer as he saw the importance of being able to communicate with children. PBS video
Rogers Mr. Rogers’ message was one of love. His work was prompted by the disgust he had for the state of children’s television. Once he felt he had covered every topic he could that a child would ever need to know, he retired. Love and goodbye video
Mr. Rogers Lessons are universal Kindness is free How we treat each other matters We are all important Best loser then I’m Ok
Rogers What can we take from this as adults? Talking to each other with the kindness Mr. Rogers exudes is not easy sometimes. However, if we come to a hard conversation with a difficult person, trying to learn why they are feeling this way about a thing can help us communicate with them. Mr. Rogers teaching methods have been vastly studied. Yale had a study that showed children learned more from him. Others have done dissertations on his teaching methods and how educators can learn and emulate his style. Adults can learn from him in not only how to talk to children but how to talk to other adults. His documentary is coming out soon Won’t You Be My Neighbor. I highly recommend anyone who is not familiar with him to watch a few episodes…and if not…please do check out his film. He also wrote books if that is more your speed. Talk about kindness and a few stories of others.
