Interactions of Life

Warmup What is the smallest ecosystem you can think of? What is the largest ecosystem you can think of? Look around the room and identify all of the ecosystems.

What is a biosphere? A biosphere is the part of Earth that supports life. Consists of: top portion of the Earth’s crust all waters that cover the Earth’s surface atmosphere that surrounds Earth Biosphere Egg – developed by Nasa Perfectly ecologically balanced mix of plant, algae and animal life surviving with daily input of light only.

Ecology: study of interactions that occur among organisms and their environment. What is an ecosystem? 1. Without using your book, in your jpurnal make a quick list of the components (parts) of an ecosystemI 2. Pair with your table partner and share your list.

An ecosystem consists of: All the organisms living in an area All of the nonliving features in their environment ALL biotic factors ALL abiotic factors

Organism Population Community Ecosystem (same kind of organism) Community (populations of several organisms) Ecosystem All biotic and abiotic factors

What is a habitat? The place in which an organism lives beaver habitat giraffe habitat polar bear habitat sea lion habitat

1. What is the biosphere? (List all the components) 2. What is ecology? 3. How are the terms habitat and biosphere related to each other? 4. What is the major difference between a community and a population? Give at least one example of each. 5. Does the amount of rain that falls in an area determine which kinds of organisms can live there? Why or why not? Give examples to support your answer.
