Jesus and Nonviolence Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:38-41 Jesus offers a third way, Active resistance Not passive acceptance of oppression and violence Not retaliation, not threatening.

Turn the other cheek: Don’t let them backhand you on the right cheek Turn the other cheek: Don’t let them backhand you on the right cheek. Turn and offer the left cheek.

Go the extra mile: Carry the Roman soldier’s pack beyond the one mile limit.

If they sue you for your coat, give them your cloak as well If they sue you for your coat, give them your cloak as well. Dramatize the injustice.

Jesus’ love protects the vulnerable, but without violence.

Jesus and internalized oppression When a woman is bent over in suffering, Jesus: Notices Interrupts the Sabbath service Calls her forth Heals her. She stands praising God. Officials are outraged.

Other examples Jesus protects Mary of Bethany from those who protest her anointing. Jesus welcomes children when they are silenced and excluded. The blind beggar is called forth, not sent away.
