Paper 3 Geographical Applications What's assessed 3.3.1 Issue evaluation 3.3.2 Fieldwork 3.4 Geographical skills How it's assessed Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes 76 marks (including 6 marks for SPaG) 30% of GCSE Pre-release resources booklet made available 12 weeks before Paper 3 exam

Cartographic Skills

What are the four figure grid references? 00 01 02 15 17 16 18 19 20 03 04 05 Find the bottom left hand corner of the square. Match the line downwards to a number along the bottom row Match the line across to a number along the side.

This is the yellow square from the previous slide with the four figure reference of 0218 To find a six figure grid reference: Find the bottom left hand corner of the square, read the number for the downwards line e.g. 02 You need to imagine the square is broken up into ten little squares. Estimate the next number using the imaginary lines inside the square. e.g. 5 You need to do this again for the lines going across. Put the numbers together to get a six figure grid reference like this: 025189 02 18

In which direction is……?

What is a scale?

How far is it from A to B if each grid square is 1KM? 4cm : 1KM A B

If the distance on paper between X and Y is 12cm and the scale is 4cm : 1KM then what is the distance on the ground?

How can we tell on a map if the land is flat or hilly?

How can we tell on a map if the land is flat or hilly? OS MAP

Contour Lines They join up places with the same height. They are an orange / brown colour on Ordnance Survey maps

20m A 10m 30m 10m 20m 30m 40m 30m 20m 10m 40m 30m 20m B 10m Write down the elevation (height) of: The Shrieking Shack, Quidditch pitch, Hogsmeade Station, Whomping Willow, Gate House, Post office, Unicorn, Gawp, Hagrid’s Hut. 20m 30m 40m Extension: What is the feature in the north-east of the map shown by the ‘V’ like contour lines. 50m

Spot Heights They give the exact height of any point. They are usually a black dot with a number.

Layer colouring Areas of different heights are shown as bands of different colours. Brown shows higher ground

Match the 3D Image with the contour line image. B C D

A common question in exams is to ask you to describe the distribution (spread) of something on a map. You must clearly describe the distribution using compass directions, place names and data from the key. 3. Describe the distribution of the % of people living in slums in Africa in 2010 (3 marks)
