Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD By setting up soviets in many towns Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg Ebert made an agreement with the Freikorps to put down the Rebellion It created lasting bitterness between Communism and the Socialist Party OR It gained approval from many in Germany Against Ebert’s plans for democracy Wanted Germany to be ruled by workers councils/soviets Kurt Eisner was murdered One of the left-wing, Communist parties

You will need to makes notes WITHOUT using words* *Do not worry, there will be a chance to write down what happened later on!! 1920 – Dr. Wolfgang Kapp led 5000 freikorps into Berlin The army refused to fire on the Freikorps It looked like Ebert’s government was doomed But, Industrial workers called a general strike This brought Berlin to a hault, wit no water, transport or power Kapp realised he could not success and left the country He was hunted down and died whilst awaiting trial The rest of the rebels went unpunished

The Munich Putsch: Causes WEIMAR WEAKNESSES The constitution and opposition to it made the government weak Invasion and inflation made the government VERY weak in 1923. September 1923, Stresemann called off the strike in the Ruhr. This made EVERY German angry! NAZI PARTY WAS GROWING Crises of 1923, meant Nazi Party membership grew (55,000 members). The Nazi Stormtroopers (SA) grew quickly, and wanted a revolution Hitler became friends with General Ludendorff (WWI hero) = might get support of the army Mussolini’s Example In 1922, Mussolini had seized control of the government of Italy by marching on Rome. Label each reason 1 to 3, based on how important you think each reason is for causing the Munich Putsch. Be prepared to justify your answer. Write down in order of importance
