Today’s Objectives Explain the meaning of archetype, wyrd and comitatus as they relate to Beowulf. Appreciate the importance of loyalty in AS society Recognize the need for the use of kennings and alliteration in AS epic poetry

Archetype Perfect example. Original model from which all things are copied or on which they are based. Prototype

Archetypes in Beowulf Beowulf is the archetypal hero. Grendel is the archetypal villain. The image of a lone hero standing up to a fire-breathing dragon or other giant monster is one of the most archetypal images in Western heroic literature.

Wyrd: Fate Important element in AS worldview was the concept of wyrd (fate). Believed that a hero could postpone death through bravery but that fate would win out.

Dragon: symbolism Embodiment of wyrd

Comitatus: Warrior’s role Warrior must defend his lord to the death. A true AS hero would worry more about showing fear than being disloyal or dying. Breach of comitatus: Failure of Beowulf’s men to come to his aid.

AS Society Built on loyalty

Comitatus: Leader’s role Dispensing treasure is a symbol of loyalty between the king and his people

Barrow Can mean a hill In this poem it is a mound of earth or stones built over a burial site.

Kenning A metaphor made of a pair of words

Each member must choose a role and fulfill the corresponding obligations: • Reader: Responsible for reading all the questions and make sure everyone understands them. • Task Master: Make sure that the group completes all of the assigned tasks. • Recorder: Responsible for writing anything that needs to be written down. • Collector: Make sure that all names are on the answers and answers are complete. Turn in by the end of class. Kenning collector: helps group find kennings in Part II and writes them at end of answers to questions
