TD-SCDMA and TD-SCDMA Forum Dr. Li Wan Lin Vice Chairman of TD-SCDMA Forum

What is the status of TD-SCDMA ? What is TD-SCDMA ? Majority of the IMT-2000 spectrum in China has been allocated to TD-SCDMA; which is an ITU recognized IMT-2000 radio technology (see M.1457). It is a highly efficient radio technology that is suitable for any network scenario. Since it forms part of the UMTS family (3GPP standards), it can be used as a stand alone, migration from GSM/GPRS to IMT-2000 or as a complement to UTRA FDD (W-CDMA). The respective ITU Recommendations are M.1457 and Q.1741.2 onwards (i.e. 3GPP Release R4 onwards). TD-SCDMA combines four multiple access techniques; in particular it brings the benefits of both the Time Division Duplex and Code Division Multiple Access. With Joint Detection, Dynamic Channel Allocation and Smart Antenna, inter cell interference is considerably minimised for most efficient use of the spectrum. What is the status of TD-SCDMA ? Since 1998, both network infrastructure and the Mobile Terminal are being developed by globally well known industry leaders. The same is true for Test Equipment and Test Tools. Network Acceptance tests have been successfully carried out in Beijing with both high speed (125Km/hr) and long range (>20Km) video transmission test carried out successfully. Data speeds of up to 384 Kbps have also been performed as part of general acceptance tests; thus meeting the data requirements of IMT-2000. 9-10 July 2003

What is TD-SCDMA Alliance ? Founded in 2002, it is fully supported by three Chinese Ministries (SDPC, MII and MOST) and has, as founding members, seven major Chinese mobile equipment, chipsets and terminal manufacturers. It also has more than 25 foreign manufacturers as members and the list is growing. What is TD-SCDMA Forum ? Counting more than 410 members in the category of operators, manufacturers, Chip-set providers, R&D institutions, content providers and Venture Capital firms – both local and global – it was founded in 2000, with the assistance of the Chinese Ministries. The forum’s main focus is further technology development of TD-SCDMA, industrialization promotion and further marketing promotion. With China as a major world-wide mobile market (having overtaken USA) and with the majority of IMT-2000 world-wide harmonised spectrum assigned to TD-SCDMA, this efficient technology will be a major player in providing a very cost-effective evolution path from GSM/GPRS to IMT-2000. 9-10 July 2003
