Buying a House Today it has become very difficult to get a mortgage to buy a house. Lenders often want a minimum of 10% deposit, which is rare for young people to have at their disposal. How much does that mean you would need for a £120,000 house?! Recent government initiatives have reduced this to just 5%. Now work out 5% of 120,000 The scheme is only applicable to new builds – which there have not been many of and mostly are apartment buildings, not houses.
