1920’s Advertisements

What is the purpose of Advertising? To persuade a consumer to buy a particular product or in some cases a lifestyle. To inform consumers of their product. Magazines, newspapers, motion pictures and radio were some of the main avenues for advertisements in the 1920’s. *What are some of the ways companies advertise today?

Brief History of Advertisements Advertisements started to really expand in the 1880’s during industrial expansion. Prior to World War I investigative journalism was the trend in magazines, that changed in the 1920’s people began yearning to read more then just about reforms and corruption. After World War I magazines such as Ladies’ Home Journal, and The Saturday Evening Post began to target consumerism and advertisements started taking off in these and other publications. Total advertising volume in the United States flew from $200 million in the 1880s to about $3 Billion in 1920s. Reasons for the growth include the introduction of radio, motion pictures, and more publications.
