Produce components from moulds One gauge casting

Producing plaster components Introduction One gauge casting is the production of plaster casts in ornate features, for example, small ornate pieces or ceiling roses. The skill being developed relates to casting smaller pieces of work

Producing plaster components Introduction Aims: To introduce fibrous work Objectives: To recognise and understand the processes used in one gauge casting

Producing plaster components One gauge casting Can you answer the following? What are glass strands? What types of products are made using one gauge? When is reinforcement put in the cast? List the processes involved in one gauge casting What is important to eliminate to avoid holes in the face of the cast?

Producing plaster components One gauge casting One gauge casting is mainly used to produce small repeat items such as small ornate pieces, plaques, ceiling roses, etc

Producing plaster components Introduction One gauge casting Put the required amount of water into a bowl or bucket Add plaster to the water until you have a saturated mix Now brush on the mix and make sure the mould is covered, making sure to eliminate all the air so as not to create holes on the face of the cast Make a bag with hessian and put the dry plaster in and dust over plaster in mould to stiffen up Lay the hessian on carefully, making sure it is not pushed through to face Flood the mould with the rest of the mix and strike off to make sure the back is flat

Producing plaster components Introduction One gauge casting One gauge casting is the simplest form of casting, the reinforcement is added to the mix before it is put in the mould. Put the required amount of water into a bowl or bucket Add plaster to the water until you have a saturated mix Mix the chopped glass strands into the mix Now brush on the mix and make sure the mould is covered, making sure to eliminate all the air so as not to create holes on the face of the cast Flood the mould with the rest of the mix and strike off to make sure the back is flat

Producing plaster components Conclusion You should now be able to answer the following: What are glass strands? What types of products are made using one gauge? When is reinforcement put in the cast? List the processes involved in one gauge casting What is important to eliminate to avoid holes in the face of the cast?
