Moving with the times to make a difference Empowerment and Success Conference October 2017 Purpose of the session – a vision can be a powerful and living communication tool for an organization. How could we make Ara Taiohi’s vision more powerful and more useful?

What’s in a name? NZ Federation of Sheltered Workshops NZ Federation of Enterprise and Achievement NZ Federation of Vocational and Support Services 2014 Inclusive NZ Our name is a potted history of the disability sector In 1982 sheltered workshops were the way we provided employment supports for disabled people but change was already in the air. Organisations already moving away from sheltered work and looking at other ways of providing supports and services In 2007 NZ signed UNCRPD and passed legislation that removed UNCRPD – allied organization Social model – it’s the environment that is disabling, not a person’s impairments Members were working to build inclusive communities so that disabled people could participate fully and this fundamentally changed our role. Inclusion can’t happen in a vacuum and we needed to support our members work by moving out of the disability sector and

Community Infrastructure Coherency Thinking Information Leadership The Work Thinking Information From the research we’ve developed the Enabling Conditions of Learning Organisations to help organisations think about how they can design themselves for on-going learning, change and development. The Work is at the centre because in a learning organisation all the conditions are aligned to what they are there to do. Community – the organisation recognises itself as, and behaves as, a community Thinking – the organisation is able to learn from itself and others Infrastructure – organisational systems support the work of the organisation Coherency – the organisation is driven by its social purpose Leadership – the organisation has effective leadership at all levels Information – the organisation has the information it needs to carry out its work effectively Leadership Enabling Conditions for Learning Organisations
