Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Acclimatization Programme for Newly Recruited Faculty At NIT Warangal Presented By Dr M Raja Vishwanathan Head Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Formation of the DEPT. OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES The department of Humanities and Social Sciences was started in 2009, after bifurcation from the former combined DEPT. OF MATHEMATICS AND HUMANITIES. At the moment there are five faculty members, two of whom joined the department recently. Faculty: Prof. D. S. Kesava Rao Professor of English Dr. M. Raja Vishwanathan Assistant Professor of English and Head of the department Dr. K . Madhavi Associate Professor of English Dr. B. Spoorthi Assistant Professor of English Dr. P. Madhumathi Assistant Professor English

Vision and Mission of the Department VISION - To promote excellence in education by offering a variety of courses at the undergraduate and post graduate levels to equip the students of National Institute of Technology Warangal with the requisite linguistic and people skills required to excel in any field. Humanities and Social Sciences Department offers courses across the board ranging from basic to advanced courses in English, catering for diverse needs of students. MISSION- To impart quality education and life skills that enable students to become successful on the personal, academic, and professional front; to foster critical thinking through a diverse range of courses aimed at making students industry ready; to encourage and facilitate research in advanced areas of Humanities.

Faculty strength All faculty members : Have PhD; Have published extensively in the areas of ELT, British literature and American literature in reputed national and international journals Have guided research in diverse areas in ELT and literature; four PhDs have been awarded between 2014 and 2018 in ELT; Are motivated to guide research in such emerging areas of ELT as English for Science & Technology, CALL, Creative Writing in English , Business communication and Cultural Politics in Language Teaching. Have organized workshops, STTPs and seminars highlighting recent developments in English Language Teaching and Learning; Are keen on carrying out projects in a gamut of areas in ELT such as bilingualism and bilingual education, narrative techniques, academic reading, etc. Are members of Board of Studies of Central, State and private universities across the country.

INFRASTRUCTURE The department has an English Language Communication Skills Lab housed in computer centre for imparting practical training in communication skills to students of I B.Tech ; an audio visual lab with an LCD projector is used to teach the nuances of listening and speaking skills through software procured for the purpose.

Honours and distinctions Professor D S kesava Rao is a certified International Examiner for IELTS by the British Council. Professor D S kesava Received Gold Medal in person from the President of India in 1997 for standing first in English Elocution for University Teachers at the State Level Janmabhoomi competitions.

Present areas of research The department currently offers research programmes in the broad areas of English Language Teaching , British literature and American literature.

PLAN OF ACTION Electives for B.Tech and M.Tech students in English and foreign languages, and social sciences, such as industrial psychology and sociology. Remedial classes in English for students weak in English.

Expectations of the Dept The Department has the following expectations : Research activities- faculty members are expected to guide research in all areas of ELT and literature and keep alive the vibrant research atmosphere. Mentoring : Faculty members are expected to counsel students who need that extra bit of motivation from time to time to perform well in academics and cope with the rigours of academic demands at NITW. The department hopes to do this all the year round and not just before the start of the semester. New courses : Courses in literature, psychology and philosophy are very popular at IITs and our department intends offering such courses that focus on humanity and the human condition in the near future. This will take off once we add faculty members from other disciplines.
