Organizing the Table 1750 – 17 known elements Microscopes = more found 1789 - Antoine Lavoisier grouped the known elements into 4 categories: Metals Nonmetals Gases Earths

Mendeleev 1860’s - Russian chemist: Dmitri Mendeleev Wanted to organize 63 elements for chemistry students Figured out organization while playing cards (solitaire)

Mendeleev’s Arrangement Rows of increasing mass Elements in same columns had same properties Called periodic table

Mendeleev’s Periodic Table

Mendeleev’s Table Could not make complete table b/c some elements not discovered yet Later discoveries only supported his arrangement
