Language Arts - The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer Chapters 12 & 13 4/11/18

Warm-up #1, 4/11

Warm-up #2, 4/11

Vocabulary Redundancy: Using a phrase or word that repeats something else and is unnecessary. Writers should be concise and precise, and avoid redundancy. Personification: when a writer describes an object as if it were a person. Provide your own example. Ex. The trees sighed in the afternoon breeze. (Trees cannot really sigh, but seemed to as they blew gently in the breeze.)

Agenda, 4/11 Learning Target: Analyzing characters Recognizing misplaced modifiers Warm-up – grammar HOTS Discuss and add to our character charts in our journals Ticket Out the Door (paragraph writing, collected for a grade)

Choices and Consequences The two essential questions of our current unit of study: What is the relationship between choices and consequences? What makes a good leader? One major summative assessment for this unit will be a literary analysis essay.

Exit Ticket, 4/11 (Write on Notebook paper to turn in at the end of class) Choose Maria, Celia, Tam Lin, or El Patron, and consider the information we have discussed and written in our character charts. Write a short paragraph listing two major choices that character has made and the consequences those choices have had on Matt. You will need to include specific examples from the novel and include at least one quote from the text to support your writing. When finished, complete next two pages in grammar packet.

This is the real oasis that inspired Nancy Farmer to write about the oasis that Tam Lin shows Matt in the novel. It is the Quitobaquito Oasis in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona:

This is an artist’s rendering of the Ajo Mountains.
