Volcanoes like Kilauea, in Hawaii, are formed when lava pours out of an opening in the Earth. Lava is hot, liquid rock that flows from beneath the Earth’s crust. Lava running running down a volcano cools and hardens. Eventually, the lava builds up the sides of a volcano, allowing it to grow as big as a mountain. You don’t have to travel to Hawaii to see a volcano up close. With this experiment, you can see one erupt in your kitchen! You Do To build volcano, place a baking sheet on your table. Put the pie plate on top of the pan. Place the water bottle in the center of the pie plate and glue strips around the bottle vertically. Leave the top open. You can tape the ends of the strips to the pie plate. Place the funnel in the top of the bottle. To make the lava, in a measuring cup, mix: 2 Tbsp. corn starch a few drops of coloring 2 Tbsp. baking soda a few drops dish soap 2 Tbsp. flour 6. Add one tablespoon of water at a time until mixture is a bit thinner than toothpaste. Stir thoroughly. Then pour the mixture into the bottle, through the funnel.
