Journal Launch Question Why did the Industrial Revolution start in England?

What is it called? On the top of the page of paper, give your place a name. Nothing offensive, violent gang, drug, or alcohol related. Be Prepared to follow directions. You will have many opportunities to be creative. The drawing doesn’t have to be perfect, but you HAVE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. This will be collected for a grade.

England 1700 (2 slides) Draw a rural village in England in 1700: Draw a river across your paper connecting east to west: the river should be about 1.5 inches wide Draw 2 roads: one running north to south and crossing the river at the bridge, one running east to west. Neither have to be a straight line. They should be about 1/2 inch wide Draw a simple wooden bridge crossing the river

England 1700 Draw 7 houses Draw 1 church Draw 1 cemetery Draw 1 store Draw 1 pub Draw 1 coalmine Draw 50 little trees (tiny)

Fast Forward to 1745 Construct a canal that runs perpendicular to your river. It should be at least half inch wide. Also, build yourself a nice home somewhere on the map since you are now rich! Perpendicular Line

1750 For a variety of reasons (soap, diet, sanitation, Enclosure Acts, etc), there is a population explosion in England, and your village. Add 10 houses

Draw 5 houses for workers 1773 Richard Arkwright invents the water frame which is 100 times faster than a single person. The Water Frame needs a water source and so it must be built in a factory along a river. Add 1 factory (no smoke – it is water powered) along the river (not the canal). Draw 5 houses for workers

1774 Draw 15 more houses Draw 1 church Draw 1 pub Draw 1 store Factory is expanding and needs workers. Many poor peasants move to this village to work in the factory. Draw 15 more houses Draw 1 church Draw 1 pub Draw 1 store Draw any additional roads or bridges that you feel are necessary to accommodate the growth of the village

Draw 5 new factories on the river bank (still water powered) 1778 The Textile factory has brought in huge profits. The owners invest in more factories. Draw 5 new factories on the river bank (still water powered) Draw 5 more houses

Draw 5 tenements (Buildings that houses dozens of families) 1780 Unemployed from surrounding areas begin flocking to your village looking for work. Draw 5 tenements (Buildings that houses dozens of families) Add 1 store Add 1 pub Add 1 church Add 1 private boys school

1783 Although workers barely eke out a marginal existence, a few families live in luxury. These are mostly the large landowning families and factory owners. Add 2 estate homes for these people – you may remove trees for these homes if necessary

Add 10 factories with smoke 1785 (2 slides) James Watt invents the steam engine. This is more efficient and can be built anywhere (it doesn’t need a water source). At this point you may need to remove trees to continue expansion. Add 10 factories with smoke Add smoke to all other factories (because steam engine is more efficient so it replaces the water frames) Add one more nice house

Add 5 regular houses Add 1 tenement Add 1 coalmine (this is what powers the steam engine)

Add 5 houses for railroad builders 1820 Steam engine is applied to transportation creating the first steam locomotives. Add 1 major railroad line connecting all your factories to your coal mines. It must be one continuous track which must connect all factories and mines. You can build additional bridges if needed. Add 5 houses for railroad builders

1827 Add 1 jail Add 2 pubs Add 2 tenements Women and children are paid less than men and for this reason are more likely to be hired. This leaves many men with no job. Depressed, ashamed, and angry, some of these men turn to crime and the social life of the pub. Add 1 jail Add 2 pubs Add 2 tenements

Add 20 streetlights (must be located along streets) 1835 Iron smelters used coke (a by-product of coal) to improve the iron smelting process. Soon they learned that the gases released during the coke making process produced light. This was then piped in to burn in street lights. Add 20 streetlights (must be located along streets)

1838 Add 2 hospitals Add 1 cemetery Two major factories are textile and steel. Working conditions in both are appalling. Diseases such as white lung disease: lung ailments such as cancer, tuberculosis, emphysema, etc. Other were injured on the job. There were no protections in any of the factories. Add 2 hospitals Add 1 cemetery

Add 1 more railroad line passing east to west Add 5 houses 1840 Increased need for quicker transportation for raw materials and finished products. Potato famine in Ireland drives many to England. Add 1 more railroad line passing east to west Add 5 houses Add 1 tenement

Add 2 private schools (mark with a P) Add 1 nice house 1842 City life is improving, especially for the middle class. There is a whole new cultural life available in cities. Draw 1 theatre Draw 1 museum Add 2 private schools (mark with a P) Add 1 nice house

1850 Add 20 more houses Add 5 tenements Add 2 stores Add 1 church The Enclosure movement in the rural areas, by this time has brought several million acres under private use, further forcing many people off the land and to the cities. Add 20 more houses Add 5 tenements Add 2 stores Add 1 church Add 5 factories Add 1 pub Add 2 nice houses Add 1 estate (mansion)

COMPLETION ACTIVITY In two well written paragraphs, on the back side of your drawing(or on paper), answer the questions below. 1. Give me an overview of how villages changed into cities? Explain what we just did. 2. How did inventions and new technologies affect how cities developed? Use two examples from the urban simulation drawing.
