D37 Volcanic Landforms

D37 Volcano Background 1 Volcanoes can be destructive as hot lava can burn almost everything in its path. Volcanoes also release large amounts of gas and ash that can cause other damage. But volcanoes can also be constructive as they form rocks and new landforms.

D37 Volcano Background 2 Magma: hot liquid rock underground Lava: hot liquid rock above ground Explosive volcanoes erupt and release ash and magma. As it cools it forms rock layers. Later eruptions add to the rock layers and form mountains. The force of the eruption is affected by the amount of gas in the magma.

D37 Volcano Procedure A Push clear tube into the volcano mouth and into the hole in the square plastic tray. Put 1 scoop of baking soda into the tube. Use graduated cup to pour 5 mL of less gassy red magma into the volcano tube. Observe & Record observations for 2 min. Rinse and repeat Steps 2-4.

D37 Volcano Procedure B 6. Use graduated cup to pour 2.5 mL of more gassy clear magma into the volcano tube. 7. Wet bottom of rubber stopper with water. 8. Dip rubber stopper bottom in baking soda. 9. Gently cap volcano tube with stopper. Try not to spill baking soda. Cap tube snugly. 10. Quickly turn volcano over, then flip back.

D37 Volcano Procedure C 11. Observe & Record observations for 2 min. 12. Rinse and repeat Steps 6-11. 13. When done, rinse all labwear and return all materials. 14. Your teacher will pass around two types of volcanic rock: basalt and pumice. Record observations. Explain which formed from less gassy magma and more gassy magma.
