Discuss with your group: What does the mummy look like Discuss with your group: What does the mummy look like? What do you notice?

hypothesis An idea about how things work, or what happens Mummification causes a body to _______________________________

hypothesis An idea about how things work, or what happens Mummification causes a body to DRY OUT

How can we test our hypothesis? With your group, discuss how we can test whether salt, or natron, is what makes mummification possible. What kind of experiment can we do? What should be the process? What can be a substitute for a human body?

So…. Based on what you already know about mummification, how would we know if our experiment worked? How do we actually know if the ______ is dried?

What can actually prove to us that… Prediction If your hypothesis is true, what should your results be? “Mummified Apple” “Control Apple” Indicators/Evidence Something we can measure to show how the salt affected the ______

Prediction Indicators/Evidence “Mummified Apple” If salt causes a body (or apple) to dry out, the “mummified” apple should be dry. “Control Apple” should not be dry- moisture should still be in there. Indicators/Evidence “Mummified Apple” should weigh less after mummification. “Control Apple” should weigh about the same after being left alone.

Mummifying an Apple Skin apple. Weigh apple. Cover in baking soda and salt. Weigh control apple. Place in bag in cup. Store for one week.
