Enabling Creative Students to Make Stuff Happen Enterprise for the Whole Educational Journey Libby Anson Student Employability & Enterprise Manager Enabling Enterprise for All IEEC 2017 How many people in the room are creative practitioners? www.gsa.ac.uk

Considerations for this session Issues and practices involved in supporting creative students and graduates ….to generate and sustain their own creative enterprises Methodology for engagement Developing an entrepreneurial mind-set Integrating studio practice Applying learning Creating solutions for the real-world www.gsa.ac.uk

Things Highly Creative People Do Differently* Daydream Observe everything Work the hours that work for them Take time for solitude Turn life’s obstacles around Seek out new experiences Fail up Ask big questions People-watch Take risks View life as an opportunity for self-expression Follow their true passions Get out of their own heads Lose track of the time Connect the dots Shake things up Make time for mindfulness Surround themselves with beauty Would the creatives in the room agree with this? * According to the Huffington Post, March 2016

www.gsa.ac.uk

….or are they? Can you teach someone to be an artist? Can creativity be taught? ….or are they?

Definition of Enterprise Education* To equip students/ graduates with : An enhanced capacity to generate ideas and 2. the skills to make them happen * According to the QAA NB – skills: students often think of these as technical (and we then get in to a debate about access to technical services/resources….. ) RATHER THAN personal or professional skills www.gsa.ac.uk

All students are special Creative students are: Less likely to have a conventional career path More likely to have dyslexia and/or dyspraxia Natural innovators Tangential thinkers Problem solvers Given this, creative students are almost built to be entrepreneurial. www.gsa.ac.uk

From 1909 2014 2019 At GSA, this is how we approach teaching and supporting creative students and graduates www.gsa.ac.uk
