Jewish Immigration to Georgia Georgia’s charter did not allow Catholics or Jews to immigrate to the Georgia colony.

Jewish Immigration to Georgia In 1733, many early settlers suffered from parasites and fever, and the only doctor had died. A ship of Jewish immigrants found their way to Georgia in July, 1733 but James Oglethorpe was hesitant to allow them into the colony.

Jewish Immigration to Georgia However, Samuel Nunes, a Jewish doctor, was on board and Oglethorpe allowed him and 14 Jewish immigrants to acquire land. Nunes saved many lives of the early settlers.

Jewish Immigration to Georgia The immigrants soon established Congregation Mickve Israel which has survived as the oldest Jewish congregation in the South. Many of the Jewish settlers left before Oglethorpe’s victory over the Spanish in Florida over fears of religious persecution.
