Year 11 Information Evening Science Revision Techniques
Getting unstuck
What are the most common situations? A single point of information that a student needs to look up. A multi step question that a student needs to work through.
Single point answers Resources to use: Student work book. Text book Syllabus - AQA science website Bite size website Other GCSE revision websites General websites such as Wikipedia
Multi step questions Highlight the questions key points, what it is asking you and the science bits. The space shuttle orbits at a Velocity of 17,500 miles per hour. It needs to slow to a velocity of about 226 miles per hour in order land. To do this it uses a procedure known a deorbiting. The shuttle only carries enough fuel to reduce its speed by approximately 500 miles per hour. Using your knowledge of physics suggest a way in which a space shuttle could reduce its speed in order to land?
Make key points The shuttle has to lose velocity. It has to change kinetic energy into another form. Cars change kinetic energy into heat. The force involved is friction. The space shuttle could use friction with the atmosphere to transfer kinetic energy into heat. This loss of energy would reduce the ships speed.
Using exam questions
The AQA website for Science http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/additional-science- 4408/past-papers-and-mark-schemes TES Create an account for a wealth of resources to help with the content https://www.tes.com/secondary-teaching-resources Top tips for answering longer answer questions What topic is the question asking me about? What key words will I need? What is the command word and how does this affect how I write? How can I link my keywords together to get full marks?
Using online resources
Why use online resources Students can access from a laptop, tablet, phone Excellent support for revision Free! The students are expert users!
How to best use online resources Don’t just read!!
How to best use online resources The exam boards have not yet fully caught up- it is essential that students use revision techniques involving writing exam-style answers alongside these GET CREATIVE: Key cards, posters, mind maps, Q and A cards…. 2. USE WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNT: Teach you/ a sibling/ friends, make a key info video, complete a quiz 3. APPLY WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNT: Answer exam-style questions
