AP Language: socratic I can contribute meaningfully to discussions about rhetoric. I can listen and respond effectively to my peers in discussion.

Agenda: Go over rules/procedures for Socratic Seminar again Fill out planning sheet Socratic! Self-evaluation Don’t forget that our unit assessment is NEXT CLASS. We will use your summer reading AND your extra article that you found. If you haven’t done those, you need to GET ON IT.

Socratic Rules and Procedures Reminders I was confused by _________________. I thought it meant ___________________ but what do you all think? When the author says __________________, he/she is trying to ___________________. I agree with ________________ because we can also see that in the text where it says ___________________. Student-driven: Talk to EACH OTHER (not to the teacher) Track the speaker to show you’re listening Use names when you respond to show you were listening! Keep conversation focused on rhetoric! If someone asks a question, the conversation should not move forward until at least one person has answered that question! Use textual references to support your contributions—say text title, and page/paragraph number to help people follow. If you agree/disagree, you must ADD something to the conversation.

Socratic Planning Before we begin discussion, let’s plan. Reminder – Unit Essential Questions: How do we make meaning of the world? How does ones actions, beliefs, and experiences shape his or her identity? How does our identity help us shape our understanding? Before we begin discussion, let’s plan. Complete the planning portion of your planning/evaluation sheet.

Let’s Talk! (45-60 minutes) Student-driven: I was confused by _________________.

Self-Evaluation: Review the criteria for each mastery level score for the speaking/listening standards assessed by Socratic discussions. Grade your participation and explain your evaluation, adding how you will improve or maintain your score next time.
