GOALS Key to Motivation

What are Goals? Goals are things we want – they mean something to us – they have value

There are many types of Goals You can have: Personal Educational or Career Goals

Who has Goals? We all have Goals

Goals set Priorities Why should we set Goals? Keep us Focused Make us Feel Good

Why should we set Goals? Achieve more Improve performance Increase your motivation to achieve Increase your pride and satisfaction in your achievements Improve your self-confidence Eliminate attitudes that hold you back and cause unhappiness

How To Set GOALS Setting goals at the correct level is a skill that is acquired by practice. You should set goals so that they are slightly out of your immediate grasp, but not so far that there is no hope of achieving them no-one will put serious effort into achieving a goal that they believe is unrealistic

How To Set GOALS Goals need to be SMART S is for Specific (what, where) M is for Measurable (can’t say better, good, more) A is for Achievable (win the lottery – you don’t control it) R is for Realistic (I’ll be a millionaire next week –bad timing) T is for Timely (when will you achieve the GOAL) Within the next 3months – Short Term GOAL Within the next 4 - 12 months – Intermediate GOAL Farther than 1 year away – Long Term GOAL

STEPS to Achieving GOALS All GOALS have intermediate STEPS that are also goals These steps (goals) must take place for you to reach the final GOAL You track your performance toward your final GOAL with a Graphic Organizer

GOAL Graphic Organizer Example Example: Become a certified Business Teacher by Sept/2005 Start Date: June 2004 STEPS Date to Achieve Date Achieved 1 Identify Requirements July ‘04 July ‘04 2 Take Praxis Test Oct ‘04 Sept ‘04 3 Apply for Certificate Dec ‘04 Nov ‘04 4 Check on Certificate Feb ‘05 Problem 5 Get Certificate Sept ‘05
