Setting the stage for English IV Spring 2017* MFB Art and Culture Setting the stage for English IV Spring 2017* MFB

Small group work: Get into a small group. Divide your paper into two columns. On the left, make a list of contemporary popular art from at least three different mediums: film, TV, books, painting/sculpture, games, music

Based on what you have listed, What are our culture’s values as shown in these works?

Now, In the right side column, create a second list of what you have been assigned to READ in school. Think about each grade level. Based on what you’ve read (specifically in 11th grade), what values are being indoctrinated in you via the institution of public education?

How do your two lists compare?

Deep thinking… Our institutions LIKE EDUCATION are supposed to reflect culture. (AMEERICA!) What do these two lists say about the relevance of American education? Does it do what we want it to do? Is education a broken system?

What’s the point in teaching what we teach? What is the rationale?

How does this connect to what we will do in English IV?
